High-Flyers

23:23

Singer/songwriter Paxton shares why her latest album release is such a personal journey.

The evolution of my sound … I feel I am finally finding my sound and my identity as a artist. I haven’t felt this secure about who I want to be and show up as in a while. Sonically, 23:23 is heavily influenced by a lot of African sounds and genres, whereas the first album is very pop. I was 17 years old when I released my first album, and this time around, at age 23, I have very different stories to tell. This album is a lot more grown and vulnerable and shows how I’ve evolved since the first album. I’m 23 in 2023, hence the title 23:23.

My album cover art … is a reflection of my sound: vibrant, bold and proudly Afr.

My collabs … I was blessed to work with MajorSteez and Shekhinah, two artists I admire and appreciate. The exciting part about collaborating is the fusion of different sounds and styles of music. I also love seeing other artists tap into their artistic side and explore their creative processes.

I’m deeply connected to … every single track on my album, but the last track, “Memories”, has a very special place in my heart. This song is an ode to my journey and how music changed my life. On this track, I feature the children’s choir that began my singing journey. It was truly a full-circle moment!

I was in the best space I’ve ever been creatively … everything turned out beautifully and happened with ease. I think the biggest challenge was trying not to leak news of the album prematurely because of how excited I was.

My hope is… that my fans see the growth and relate to the content of the album and that it moves, heals and inspires them.

Did you know? I actually love recording in a dark room. So all the lights are switched off before I’m able to sing. It helps with the anxiety and makes me feel as though nobody is watching.
