Anglo American Platinum Drives Water Initiative In Mapela
The initiative is endorsed by the Mogalakwena Municipality.
Currently, the Limpopo Province is experiencing major water constraints at both national and local government levels.
Anglo American Platinum will fund Hall Core Water Mapela (HCWM), which will be responsible for increasing the water supply capacity through drilling, equipping and maintaining of boreholes for a period of 10 years. HCWM will drive the implementation and maintenance of the project while, as a funder, Anglo American Platinum will pay for the potable water supplied to the community, the company said in a statement. The project, which has been successfully piloted at Schiming Village, will deliver 3 500 000 litres per day to the communities.
“Anglo American’s recently launched Sustainability Strategy highlights the importance of keeping people and the environment safe, and using collaborative regional development to provide sustainable benefits for host communities. We believe that this project is completely aligned to those objectives and we relish the opportunity to work together with the Municipality and the Mapela Traditional Authority to find a solution to the water constraints that the region faces,” stated Anglo American Platinum’s executive head of corporate affairs, Seara Mkhabela.
The Mapela project will contribute towards capacity building, facilitate black economic empowerment and create jobs through the provision of water in the region.
Senior traditional leader of the Mapela Traditional Community, Kgoshi Hans Malesela Langa added: “We welcome the Anglo American Platinum initiative in providing bulk water supply to the people of Mapela. We look forward to continuing participation in the roll-out and implementation of this project to enhance beneficiation of the people of Mapela.”
