The company saw a gap in the market in the sale of webbing, zip chain, zip sliders and assembled zips, and in 1998, FQM was born. The company purchased new machines from overseas and second-hand machines from local companies to meet the growing need.

FQM specialises in the manufacture and supply of zippers. By manufacturing its own zippers, the company ensures consistently high-quality products, carrying the well-recognised FST brand. FQM has the proud track record of not having a single return from any customer due to zip failure.

The company’s products include webbing, twill tapes, wallet tapes, ranging from light duty to heavy duty, all manufactured in polyprop, polyester, nylon and cotton yarns; zips in nylon and Delrin in types 3, 5, 8 and 10; and draw cords in widths ranging from 2mm to 12mm – manufactured in polyprop, polyester, nylon and cotton yarns.

FQM has its own dye plant, dye laboratory and quality testing facilities. The machinery is all fully automatic and is maintained by in-house technicians. Downtime is minimised with a fully-fledged on-site workshop. FQM offers a delivery service of 24 to 48 hours.

With a new diversity in its range and increased production facilities, FQM aims to increase its market share, turnover and profits substantially. Boosts in orders and new products are based on the excellent potential, strong customer relationships and vast range of the company’s quality products.

FQM is strategically positioned nationally in three locations. The factory, situated at 276 Sydney Road in Durban, has its customer base spread around it. This results in a low delivery cost to its customers as well as from its suppliers. It is next to the harbour, convenient for incoming shipments; the local airport is just 40km away; and major freight companies are all within 10km of the factory. Freight suppliers collect and deliver to their branches Monday to Friday every week. FQM maintains its stock levels at all its branches at optimum levels to ensure its customer expectations are met. The company’s Gauteng premises are in Roodepoort, and in Montague Gardens in the Western Cape. Both premises have warehouse facilities.

FQM’s customers are found throughout South Africa (with impressive national growth) and in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique and Kenya.
