Vedanta Zinc International And Key Partners Breaks Ground On New Oncology Project In Springbok

Springbok, Northern Cape, 08 May 2025 – Vedanta Zinc International (VZI), in partnership with the Northern Cape Provincial Government and Department of Health, officially broke ground on the construction of the Vedanta Oncology Project at Dr. Van Niekerk District Hospital in Springbok, Namakwa District.

The groundbreaking ceremony marks a significant milestone in decentralising cancer care in the Northern Cape, bringing life-saving treatment closer to home for thousands of residents who previously had to travel hundreds of kilometres for access.

The R22 million facility is expected to serve up to 240 patients per month and will feature 10 chemotherapy stations, with the capacity for future radiotherapy expansion. The project is being constructed in two phases and is scheduled for completion by December 2025 followed by a six-month accreditation process, after which it will be handed over to the Department of Health.

The event was attended by senior leaders from government, VZI, project partners, labour, and the community. Key stakeholders reaffirmed their shared commitment to healthcare access and long-term development in the region.

Vijay Kumar, VZI Deputy CEO said: “Today, as we break ground, we don’t just lay foundations for a building. We lay the foundation for hope, for dignity and for a healthier future. Let this be the first of many milestones in building resilient communities and delivering long-term impact.”

Honourable Dr Zamani Saul, Premier of the Northern Cape said: “We are looking forward to working together with Vedanta Zinc International to see the realization of the Oncology Centre. We therefore commit ourselves fully to this project. We will come back to officially open the doors of the Oncology Centre.”

Construction is being led by EPC partner BVi, with clinical design input from ICON, and the project has already created local job opportunities for over 60 community members to date. The initiative builds on VZI’s long-standing healthcare work through the PinkDrive programme, which has screened nearly 8,500 people in the district since 2015.
