How To Help Your Child Answer Afrikaans FAL Comprehension Tests With Confidence
As an Afrikaans FAL teacher of 25 years and now writer of the Woemaboeke-series, I believe in the words of Theodore Roosevelt:
“Believe you can and you’re halfway there.”
You are not the only parent concerned about your child’s Afrikaans FAL marks.
Here are a few tips to help your child answer Afrikaans FAL comprehension tests with confidence:
1. All the answers are in the text. Remind your child that when answering a comprehension, the “text” also includes:
• Images
• Headings
• Subheadings
2. R-e-a-d-! Read every instruction in the text before answering questions.
An example of this is an instruction common in many Afrikaans FAL papers: “Skryf die woord in aanhalingstekens” (write your answer in quotation marks). Learners usually rush through instructions and ignore or don’t read this part of the instructions. Unfortunately, marks can be lost this way.
3. Practice is key … The more comprehension tests your child practice at home, the better his or her confidence will become. Comprehension tests will become easier with practice. As a parent, you can help your child gain confidence in Afrikaans!
