ADHD And South African Lawyers: Understand It, Manage It, Thrive

Did you know that while it is estimated that about 5% of the general population has ADHD, a 2023 foreign study revealed that 12–20% of lawyers live with ADHD? This should not be surprising. Law is a high-pressure, deadline-driven profession, attracting sharp, creative thinkers who thrive on challenges.

ADHD doesn’t always look like physical hyperactivity. It’s about how the brain handles dopamine, the chemical linked to focus and motivation. An ADHD brain constantly seeks stimulation, which explains why many lawyers excel in urgent situations, problem-solving, working long hours to achieve more and hyperfocus on specific instructions.

However, ADHD also presents unique challenges which could include struggling to start or complete certain tasks, overestimating time, overscheduling, acting impulsive, feeling overwhelmed and disorganised, which over time could lead to stress and burnout. ADHD may also often be the underlying issue causing anxiety and depression. While medication helps many, knowledge, skills, structure, and self-care are also essential.

Practical tips for lawyers with ADHD may include:

  • Use lists, systems, apps and routines to help reduce decision fatigue.
  • Break tasks into small steps and set clear deadlines.
  • Manage distractions and set boundaries – sometimes silence helps, other times a stimulating environment works better.
  • Protect your dopamine supply: sleep well, eat well, exercise, take mindful breaks.
  • Aim for progress, not perfection.

If you suspect you may be struggling with ADHD, don’t rely on social media or this article for answers – seek a qualified professional. Many high performers, like Trevor Noah, Simon Sinek, Mel Robbins and Steven Bartlett, have shared in the media that they live with ADHD. When embraced and well-managed, ADHD lawyers can also be high achievers in the legal profession.

Thriving with ADHD is possible. With the right strategies, you can be a focused, resilient, and exceptional lawyer—on your own terms.
