Bokamoso Holiday Art Program Returns
The Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP) is once again hosting the popular Bokamoso Holiday Art Program for children aged 8 to sixteen years old. From June 26 to June 30, well-established South African artist, researcher, writer, and art educator Kutlwano Monyai the program will introduce children to the Artology exhibition celebrating one hundred years of the University of Pretoria’s art collection.
“Bokamoso” often refers to those with bright futures. This was certainly the case for participants of previous Bokamoso Holiday Art Programs; “it’s common knowledge that drawing and painting go a long way towards stimulating problem-solving skills and promoting self-expression and dexterity” says Puleng Plessie, the Javett-UP’s Curator of Education Mediation. Plessie reminds us that art instils a sense of connectivity and cultural awareness, not only of the child’s own community, but to the world.
“Art continues to play a significant role in improving our quality of life. We must be intentional in integrating arts education into the upbringing of our children to contribute to a healthy and critically engaged generation that will achieve the ideals of our beautiful and dynamic country” says Javett-UP CEO, Lekgetho Makola.

“Artology” is a term conceptualised by the University of Pretoria Museums and defined as ‘the study of art or an object as art. The Artology exhibition features iconic works from the University of Pretoria’s collection by artists who feature in the Department of Basic Education’s CAPS curriculum (National Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement).
Bokamoso Holiday Art Program activities include an interactive tour of selected exhibitions, discussions, painting, a film screening, drawing, printmaking, sculpting, charcoal drawing, and pot-planting workshops. Included in the package is a light lunch and all materials.
